Open Interest Explained: Reading Leverage and Liquidation Risk

Open interest (OI) is the total number of outstanding perpetual contracts that haven’t been closed. It measures how much leveraged positioning is stacked in a market — and when it moves against a flat price, it’s often the warning sign before a violent unwind.

What open interest measures

Every open perp contract has both a long and a short behind it. Open interest counts those open contracts: rising OI means new positions are being opened; falling OI means positions are being closed. Volume tells you how much traded; OI tells you how much is still at risk.

A price move on rising OI is backed by fresh money and is more likely to persist. The same move on falling OI is positioning being unwound — a weaker signal.

The setups that matter

From liquidation to cascade

When a position is liquidated, its margin is used to close the losing side, which can push price further against the next weakest position — a liquidation cascade. Exchanges manage this risk with mark-price-based liquidations and last-resort mechanisms such as auto-deleveraging (ADL), where profitable traders absorb the shortfall of a bankrupt position.

You can’t prevent a cascade, but you can avoid being the fuel: don’t add leverage into crowded positioning, and know your liquidation price before you enter.

Frequently asked questions

What is open interest in simple terms?

Open interest is the total number of open perpetual contracts. It measures the size of leveraged positioning currently at risk in a market.

Does rising open interest mean the price will go up?

No. Rising OI means more positions are opening on both sides. The question is which side is gaining — combine OI direction with price and funding to read it.

What is auto-deleveraging (ADL)?

ADL is a last-resort mechanism exchanges use when a liquidated position’s margin cannot cover its loss: profitable traders on the opposite side have positions reduced to absorb the shortfall.
